Greening of KG Layout in limbo

Last Updated 15 April 2019, 20:02 IST

The BDA is yet to devise a ground plan for the greening of the Kempegowda Layout.

At the BDA board meeting on February 26, this issue remained inconclusive. However, allottees and layout association members gave a representation to the BDA on what should be done. The board was of the view that a decision on greening the layout will be taken after elections. It felt priority should be given to civil works.

Tenders are yet to be floated for afforestation works. This means the plantation drive will be further delayed and it may not take place this monsoon.

According to BDA master plan, at least 30% of the area should be green. Apart from parks and playgrounds, the BDA must make way for roadside plantations too.

“We have allocated space for parks and playgrounds. Trees will be planted around the layout. So far, no tenders have been called as no decision has been taken by the board. Another application will be made after model code of conduct lapses,” said a senior BDA official.

Allottees allege there is no planning on the ground even in the layout’s first phase. They are now suggesting that since the BDA is taking time, they shall have well planned greening with high density trees, lakebeds greened and native trees given priority.

“Thousands of trees were cut to form the layout. Now, when the layout work is in progress and buffers zones, lakebeds and parks are almost ready for saplings (in upcoming monsoon season), the BDA should not delay any further,” said Surya Sen, an allottee.
