NET dress code leaves candidates traumatised

Last Updated 08 July 2018, 20:06 IST

Strict enforcement of dress code during the National Eligibility Test (NET) in the city on Sunday not only triggered tension but also met with intense backlash from candidates.

Across the country, 11,48,235 candidates took the test that evaluates eligibility for recruitment to the posts of assistant professors in colleges and universities.

Trouble began when officials insisted on the dress code at some exam centres. Tension gripped some centres in JP Nagar when a woman was asked to remove her mangalsutra and toe rings before entering the exam hall. Her family claimed the list of objects banned by the UGC never mentioned these items and that officials unnecessarily harassed candidates. According to sources, many women pleaded with officials to allow to them to take the test without making them remove their jewellery. But officials didn’t pay heed. As per the hall ticket, candidates cannot wear watches, metal rings along with electronic devices, books, mobile phones and pieces of paper. But the enforcement of the dress code was not uniform in all the centres.
