‘Pod taxis only after their utility is proved’

The proposed pod taxi project, which has been mired in controversy, will be taken up after ensuring that it can offer a clean mobility solution, mayor R Sampath Raj said.

Following reports that quoted him as saying that the project would be cancelled if there was opposition, he said: “The council will take up the proposal and a decision would be taken after discussion with the stakeholders.”

He also sought to emphasise that the civic body was bringing a mobility solution without investing much in the project.

“Except for the right of way, we are not investing in the project. So, let the council discuss it. Some members have sought a presentation on the project,” he said.

The mayor said a section of leaders has opposed the project due to political reasons and challenged them to show that it was not safe or viable.
