Two waste-to-energy plants to come up in 10 months

Two waste to energy plants with a total capacity of 700 tonnes will come up in Chikkanagamangala and Doddabidirakallu within a year.

Some of the legislators from Bengaluru constituencies, who took part in a meeting convened by Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara, expressed disappointment over the waste-to-energy project being a non-starter.

It has been more than a decade since the government proposed the plants that convert the waste into electricity. However, none of them took off due to opposition by residents in the areas surrounding the site marked for the plant.

Private companies are also wary of the delay in obtaining permission from multiple departments for establishing such plants.

BBMP joint commissioner Sarfraz Khan said the plants would charge Rs 170 per tonne of waste as processing fee in the beginning to recoup the investment. “Once the units are functional, the BBMP would get Rs 10 per tonne,” he said and added that the companies have agreed to set up the plants in 10 months.
