A woman whose vanity bag was snatched by a miscreant in Indiranagar, was in for an unpleasant surprise when a man, who she suspected was the thief, called her up a couple of days after the incident and proposed to her.

Hours after she got the call, a man returned her bag saying he found it at a garbage dump. Except for her mangalsutra and voter ID, everything else in the bag were intact.

However, the Indiranagar police who earlier suspected that the man who snatched the bag could be the one who proposed to her and returned her bag, later discovered that the phone call originated from Jharkhand. They brushed it away as a coincidence saying the proposal and the theft happened around the same time.

The incident happened on May 16, when Mary (name changed) was walking on Indiranagar 7th Main, 2nd Cross. She was returning home from a hotel in Vasanthnagar where she worked.

An miscreant on a scooter snatched her bag and sped away. Her bag contained a wallet, voter ID card, driving licence, debit cards, ID card, house keys, and a mangalsutra. She then lodged a complaint.

On May 18, she received a call from a man who asked her where she was. She replied she was at work after which he proposed to her. Mary hung up and informed her husband.

The same evening, a man called Mary’s hotel and told the staff that he had Mary’s bag. He left his number with the staff. When Mary called back, he asked her to meet him near a chaat stall in Indiranagar.

When Mary and her husband reached the stall, the man handed over the bag but the mangalsutra and voter ID were missing. He said he found it discarded at a garbage dump on Indiranagar 10th Main.

The police are analysing CCTV footage to identify the man who returned the bag.
