The demand by Vishnuvardhan’s family and lakhs of his fans for building his memorial may be fulfilled with the dispute over the land for the project in Mysuru set to be resolved.

In the latest development, the Mysuru district administration has assured the fans that the dispute will be resolved in January, and the construction of the memorial will begin in the same month.

“We were staging a hunger strike for an indefinite period in Halalu village near the land which the government has set aside for the memorial. Tahasildar Ramesh Babu and other Mysuru district administration officials visited us and promised the issue will be resolved in January. They also showed us documents proving the government’s ownership of the land. This time, we are confident and hope the issue over the land will be resolved,” Raju Gowda, Vishnu Sena Samitha (VSS) chief told DH.

The fans called off their protest after the Mysuru deputy commissioner promised them over the phone that construction work will begin in January. More than 15 people were staging a hunger protest, and thousands of fans were supporting the cause. The fans had threatened to intensify the strike all over the state if the government failed to take a stand by December 30, the ninth death anniversary of Vishnuvardhan.

“The judgment over the land dispute is expected in the first week of January in the high court. The government has also produced sufficient proof of ownership of the land and the family and fans have also been shown this. The issue will be resolved and construction of the memorial will begin shortly,” said a source.

Satisfied with the development, actor Anirudh, Vishnuvardhan’s son-in-law, said, “There is a ray of hope this time for us. The memorial construction will happen in Mysuru since that is appaji’s birthplace and he also breathed his last there. We wholeheartedly welcome the move and thank all the people involved directly and indirectly in the cause.”
