Last Updated 18 March 2019, 17:27 IST

The City Municipal Council has finally initiated measures to clean stormwater drains that had remained choked in different parts of the town.

All the waste which was dumped into the rajakaluves (stormwater drains) and the surroundings were cleaned by the civic workers on Monday morning.

CMC Commissioner Ramesh said that the cleaning of the rajakaluve will be completed in the next two days.

On Monday, the drains were cleaned in front of the KSRTC bus stand and Race Course Road. The civic workers removed plastic covers, bottles, bags and weeds from rajakaluve.

Ramesh said that additional civic workers will be deployed to clean rajakaluves. Awareness will be created among the public to not dump waste into the rajakaluves.

He appealed to the residents to hand over waste to the vehicle that comes to collect garbage in each ward.

He warned of slapping fines on those who violate the rules and dump garbage haphazardly.

Strict action will be initiated against those who leave sewage directly into the stormwater drains, he added.

Hitharakshana Vedike president Ravi Gowda said, “The drains are filled with silt and they should be cleared.”

On Monday, DH had carried a report on the lack of maintenance of stormwater drains in Madikeri.
