Taking lessons from South

The success of Wanted and Ghajini has started a new trend in the industry — of remakes! Both these films were the remakes of South Indian films and many Bollywood actors have now taken a liking for similar upcoming projects.

Unexpectedly however, three of our biggest Bollywood stars — Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan, are now fighting  for the rights of the Telugu film Don Seenu, to be directed by Gopichand Malineni.

When asked who among the three Bollywood stars fits the role of the protagonist the best, Malineni says, “Both Salman and Akshay are great entertainers. I think both
can play the role very well.” Aww, our heart goes out to poor Saifoo, who has been left out.

World of glitz

Yash Raj Films’ next release is Band Baaja Baaraat, directed by Maneesh Sharma (associate director of the successful Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi) and produced by Aditya Chopra.

The film stars newcomer Ranveer Singh along with Anushka Sharma.

The music has been composed by Salim-Sulaiman. Ranveer, a complete fresher with no modelling or acting experience, was selected after his very first audition, having impressed Aditya Chopra instantly.

Anushka, after her debut in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, takes on this challenging role in her third film with YRF.

The two play Shruti and Bittoo, two students who are just out of the Delhi

Come 2011 and she will begin shooting for Karan Johar’s Short Term Shaadi with Imran Khan. She has also been signed on for the remake of the Malayalam hit Bodyguard, opposite Salman Khan, directed by Atul Agnihotri. But Bebo isn’t complaining as she has two other biggies in her kitty. One of them is Ra.One with Shah Rukh Khan, which is slated to release next year. Other actors in the film include Arjun Rampal, Satish Shah, Shahana Goswami, Dilip Tahil, Tom Wu and Ben Hawkey.

She is also shooting for Agent Vinod with beau Saif Ali Khan. Given her popularity in the world of advertising, she has many endorsements lined up as well, some of which are again with Salman and Saif. That leaves only Aamir, with whom she has already given the biggest hit ever — 3 Idiots.

Akshay ropes in Russell Peters

INTERNATIONAL KHILADI: Akshay Kumar With the decision of co-producing the Indo-Canadian film Breakaway, Akshay Kumar gets himself a step closer to sealing his longstanding bond with Canadian culture and his evergreen passion — sports.

Made by acclaimed director Robert Lieberman, Breakaway is a cross-cultural hockey drama set in the Indo-Canadian community of suburban Toronto, Canada.

The film follows a hero caught between a family’s traditional expectations and a dream to make it in the national sport of his adopted country.

Making sure that he leaves no stone unturned in ensuring that his project has the best of both worlds, Akshay has roped in world-famous stand up comedian Russell Peters.
“I grew up in Brampton, where Breakaway is set and I know the characters in this movie first-hand. This is a great story about an Indian kid with a dream to do his own thing,” says Russell Peters. Russell, along with his brother Clayton Peters, will also be the executive producer of the film.

Akshay Kumar says, “I’m confident that the film will strike a chord with Hollywood audiences. It expresses the crossing of two great cultures in a wonderful way. I am proud to be associated with a project that has a brilliant and talented international cast and crew.”
