Younis Khan refuses to brief ICC on Lahore attack

Well-informed sources in the Pakistan Cricket Board said today that Younis had flatly refused attend the Executive Board meeting, where he was invited by the ICC to brief the members about his views on the March attack.

"Younis left the team manager Yawar Saeed and the board officials embarrassed when he didn't go to the meeting last month despite pleas from the officials," one source said.

"What happened was that the meeting took place at a hotel but the driver sent to pick up Younis from the team hotel had mistakenly drove him straight to the ICC headquarters in Dubai," the source disclosed.

He said when Younis realised that the meeting was being held at another venue and he was brought to the ICC office, the cricketer lost his cool.

"Younis was angry that nobody in ICC knew how to treat the captain of the Pakistan team and flatly refused to go for the board meeting to the hotel even as the ICC members waited for his arrival," the source said.

Younis is known to be very temperamental and even in September 2006 he had refused to lead the Pakistan team in the ICC Champions Trophy just two days before their departure for India since he was upset as the then PCB Chairman Shaharyar Khan had not met him at latter's office.

"Younis at that time also was offended that the board Chairman made him wait outside his office and didn't show respect to the Pakistan captain," the source recalled.

The incident eventually led to Shaharyar being asked to resign and Nasim Ashraf taking his place who persuaded Younis within hours to lead the team in absence of Inzamam-ul-Haq who was banned for four matches for his involvement in the infamous Oval Test incident.

Sources said that Younis' refusal to attend the meeting had led to a situation where the ICC board members only heard the versions of Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene and match referee Chris Broad about the Lahore incident which left seven Lankan team-members, including their assistant coach, injured and eight Pakistani security officials killed.

The ICC had invited Younis, Jayawardene (on teleconference) and Broad to give details about the incident.
