Last Updated 13 October 2010, 16:46 IST

There are seven taluk hospitals including the district hospital, 136 primary health centres and 15 community health centres. But unfortunately, more than 800 posts are vacant.
This is causing anxiety among patients as there are no sufficient staff to attend them and has resulted i the unhealthy environment in hospitals.

Though the situation has gone worse, Health Minister Sriramulu has not taken any steps  to ease the problem here. After he became the minister,  he had just visited the Hassan District headquarters, that too on a personal visit.

The citizens are sore about BJP government’s negligence towards the district. In all, there are 158 hospitals in eight taluks of the district which has a population of more than 20 lakhs. But what is the use of number game when there are no doctors or para medical staff.

It is said that more than 800 posts including that of medical officers and D group employees are vacant. This includes 100 doctors, 34 specialists, 179 staff nurses, ayahs and 349 assistants and D group employees. This has posed a big challenge for the district-level officials.

Apart from this 105 posts including pharmacists, para medical staff , 26 lab technician and others are vacant.

With several dreaded diseases raising their heads everyday, X-ray and scanning facilities have become a must. Ironically, there is only one MDN radiologist for the whole district and he too has been deputed to Sakleshpur and is serving additionally in Hassan.

The problems related to filling vacancies of the posts has been discussed in several meetings and have been brought to the notice of the government, but in vain.

Several mishaps are being reported regularly on the National Highway 48 and this indirectly exerts pressure on the doctors as there is shortage of staff. Apart from this there are several cases of chikungunya, dengue and other contractual diseases being admitted to the hospitals everyday.

When such a situation prevails in the district, the vacant posts of doctors are creating a great inconvenience to the public and shows the government’s lack of interest towards the people of the district, allege the locals here.
