The ongoing Durga puja festivity in the state has also been affected because of the downpour.

According to local weather office, the system which has already developed into a deep depression is expected to cross the land between Gopalpur and Paradip by either Friday night or early Saturday morning.

As a result, more rainfall is expected in the coastal districts as well as parts of interior Orissa during the next 24 hours. “Some areas in the coastal belt may receive heavy to very heavy rainfall,” the director of the local weather office S C Sahu said.

In view of the warning issued by the Met office, the state government has already issued a high alert in the six coastal districts of the state.

“We have directed the collectors of the six districts to remain on high alert,” state revenue minister Surya Narayan Patra said.

Danger signals have already been put in all the ports in the state and fishermen have been warned not to venture into the sea at least during the next twenty-four hours as the sea condition will be extremely rough.

However, according to a report from Paradip, three fishermen who had gone to the sea for fishing last Wednesday are yet to return home. Efforts were on to trace the missing fishermen.
