NID hikes course fees by 75 per cent from 2011-12

"The fees at NID is highly subsidised compared to other design schools in the country. Moreover, we are a partly funded by the government hence coping up with rise in operational expenses was a concern for us," NID director Pradyuman Vyas told PTI.

"The Governing Council took the decision to hike the fees for both the four-year undergraduate and two-year post graduate programmes from the academic year 2011-12," he said.

Also due to the implementation of the Sixth Pay Commission and rising cost of various services, the overall operational cost of the institute has gone up, Vyas said.Though NID has been increasing the tuition fees by 10-15 per cent every year, but it was not enough to sustain the rising cost of the institute, he said.

According to NID registrar Vijaya Deshmukh, the annual fees for undergraduate course was Rs 1.20 lakh, which has been increased to Rs 2.10 lakh, while for post graduate courses the fees have been raised from Rs 1.40 lakh per year to Rs 2.55 lakh per year from academic year 2011-12.

The four-year undergraduate course fee would go up from around Rs 4.80 lakh to Rs 8.40 lakh, and two year PG course would cost Rs 5.1 lakh from next year.
