Govt to take stock of performance of 8 new IITs

Several key issues related to these institutes including infrastructure development and teacher shortage are also expected to come up for discussion at the meeting which is likely to be chaired by HRD Minister Kapil Sibal, according to sources in the HRD Ministry.

In all, eight new IITs were set up between 2008 and 2009 in places like Ropar (2008), Bhubaneswar (2008), Gandhinagar (2008), Hyderabad (2008), Patna (2008), Jodhpur (2008), Mandi (2009) and Indore (2009).

Apart from these, ITBHU Varanasi is also slated for conversion as IIT Varanasi. At present several of the these IITs are functioning from temporary campus.

At a meeting of the IIT council in September this year, Sibal had announced that IITs would also offer courses in medicine.

Besides, he also said that the IITs would allow foreign nationals on permanent faculty positions and students from abroad at the post graduate level.
