Rs 5 lakh ex-gratia to kin of AP students

Total compensation of Rs 5 lakh would be given to the families of two students who died in the incident. Besides a member of their families would also be provided the job of home guard, Khammam District Superintendent of Police Kanti Rana Tata told PTI over phone today.

"The DGP office is giving Rs 2 lakh while we are giving Rs 3 lakh from the welfare fund of District Police department," Tata said. The SP further said that compensation will also be given to the three injured students.

Two students -- Venkat Krishna of class X and Sai Baba of standard VIII -- were killed and three others injured when the sten gun (9-mm carbine weapon) ,being demonstrated by constable M Srinivas during an 'Open House' session organised as part of the 'Police Commemoration Week', went off accidentally at Velairpadu village on Wednesday.

In the wake of the tragic incident, Andhra Pradesh DGP K Aravinda Rao had said that 'Open House' programmes would be reviewed by the department. Khammam District Collector N Nageshwar Rao, who ordered a magisterial inquiry into the Velairpadu incident, had earlier announced Rs 25,000 each for the family of the deceased students and Rs 5,000 each for those injured.
