Last Updated 28 June 2009, 18:18 IST

The petitioner V Padmanabha, former district judge had moved the High Court seeking directions to construct platforms high enough for senior citizens and physically challenged to easily board or alight from the trains.

The petitioner said that most of the railway stations in the Country including the City’s cantonment railway station are not senior citizens friendly and sought directions to increase their height. Pointing out that the compensation for the railway accident victims is still as per the 1997 amendment, he said that there has been a proposal to increase it, but nothing has been done so far.

He said that during the past 12 years, the Dearness Allowance (DA) of the government employees was increased 24 times, but the compensation for accident victims remains the same and sought directions to increase it to Rs 15 lakh.

The division bench headed by Chief Justice P D Dinakaran and Justice Aravind Kumar has ordered notice to the Ministry for Railways and South Western Railways.
