Officials here said the workers were sent to the North African country by man-power agencies but had been living under trying circumstances with their employers not paying their wages.

Muniaswamy, one of the workers from Chennai stranded in Libya, had narrated their plight to his relatives and appealed for their rescue.

Similarly, relatives of the workers from Cuddalore District had approached Tamil Nadu Health Minister M R K Panneerselvam to set the workers free and bring them back to India.

Panneerselvam in turn had approached Alagiri and requested him to rescue the labourers.
The Union Minister contacted the Indian embassy officials in Libya and sought their cooperation in rescuing the workers.

Already a batch of 40 workers had been rescued, and steps were taken to secure the release of the remaining 40 workers. The workers would reach India shortly, officials said.

In Jalandhar, relatives and kin of 108 Indians, who went from Punjab to Libya in 2008 to work but are now stuck there, have also sought the government's help in getting them back.

Addressing a press meet, the relatives said that they got their visas two years back to work in some Pakistani companies there.

But the companies in which they were working have ceased to exist and their visas are now with Libyan immigration and they are asking for a huge sum to release it, they said.
