Over 51,000 fake varsity certificates in circulation in India

High Court had, on its own, asked the central agency to conduct probe in this regard while hearing petition filed by a former principal of Siddharth Law College in Mumbai, alleging that one of the lecturers possessed a bogus degree certificate.

Exact figure, as revealed by Justice D Y Chandrachud after going through the report, is 51,576. The division bench of Chief Justice Mohit Shah and Justice Chandrachud asked additional solicitor general Darius Khambata to take instructions from the HRD ministry about exploring the possibility of issuing E-Certificates, as suggested by CBI, as an anti-forgery measure.

In the case of Chitra Salunkhe, the former lecturer with Siddharth College, Mumbai University's lawyer told the court that the varsity has decided to withdraw her LLB and LLM degree, but a final decision will be taken by Chancellor, i.e. the Governor.

According to Ashok Inamdar, former Principal who filed this petition, Salukhe obtained fake BA degree from Kaktiaya University in Andhra Pradesh. University later conducted probe and found out that Inamdar's allegations were true.
