Hundreds of human skulls found at Annigeri near here recently could have been that of those who perished in an epidemic disease that had struck the village, a team which investigated the matter said today.
The team of Dharwad University officials led by S N Sadaksharappa in its report submitted to the District Deputy Commissioner also suspected that there was a possibility that these skulls could have been brought from a burial ground from those who practiced black magic to perform pooja and later dumped in a place. The discovery of several skulls about three months ago near a canal in the village had triggered panic. The report rules out that it was skulls of soldiers who died in a war, officials said.
