A) You must know that engineering is not the ideal route to become a forensic scientist. However, if you are very clear that you would like to pursue engineering, then branches such as Biotechnology, Biomedical Engineering or Medical Electronics would be your best choice.

The other option would be to get an MBBS degree, which will open the doors for you to do an MD in Forensic Sciences.

Q) I am in the first year of an Engineering degree in Information Science. What is the job scope for this subject? Should I switch to another branch of Engineering next year?

Shaaz Shakeeb

A) Information Science is a lucrative branch of Engineering, and popular too. If you have joined a reputed institute and are happy with your subjects, continue in the same field. You may take up a course in Computer Applications and Personality Development. On your own, build your communication and presentation skills, and brush up on general knowledge.

Q) I passed Class 12 in the year 2008. I am now pursuing a career in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering Programme (Instrument Systems) which is a licence course. It is a two-and-a-half-year course with an additional six-month on-the-job training. I had earlier enrolled for a BSc degree at IGNOU but I now want to pursue a BTech degree. What should I do?

Kumar Naidu

A) If you have completed Class 12 with Science, you are eligible for an Engineering degree, either in a regular or evening college. Engineering through open universities is still under review by the government, so it is better not to go for it. Three-year degree courses in Science, Computers and other subjects can be taken up through correspondence and since you have already enrolled for a Bachelor’s programme, it may be better to proceed with it and get yourself a degree.

Q) I am in Class 11 (PCMC) and I am preparing for IIT and NDA entrance exams. I wish to join the IAS. What should I do?

Aman Varma

A) Admission to IIT (or any other Engineering college) will make you an engineer in four years, after which you can appear for the Civil Services exam and become an IAS officer. However, NDA is a specialised exam for the Military Service.

Once you are selected, you are committed to serve the Armed Forces for at least 20 years. Only if you complete your degree and join the Army through Short Service Commission can you appear for the IAS exam before the end of your tenure. So, you decide.

Q) I have a Bachelor’s degree from Siddaganga College, Tumkur University. My aggregate is 65%. I want to join the Police Force and I need details on how to appear for the entrance exam?

Sridhar R S

A) Civil and Reserve Police sub-inspectors are recruited by the Director General of Police Office periodically, depending on vacancies, from time to time. Minimum qualification is a Bachelor’s degree in any stream.

You also have to pass a physical fitness round and interview. Start improving your heath, generation knowledge, communication skills, and watch out for the announcement of the exam date. You may also approach the Police Recruitment Office in CID Office, Carlton House, Palace Road, Bangalore for further details.
