Hospitals gear up for festival rush

Most of the government hospitals have even refused leave to their staff in order to be fully equipped in case of emergency.

The cases related to burns, injury to eyes and worsening of asthma are the most common during the festival.

The hospitals such as Minto Eye Hospital have asked all their doctors to be at the hospital. Some of the private hospitals have offered to be on call round the clock from November 5 to 7.

Dr Sampriti of Samprathi Eye Hospital and Squint Centre said: “During Diwali, the emergency rooms in the hospitals are busy treating people for burns. Lack of parental supervision and bursting firecrackers on roads without care lead to higher incidences of bystandards getting injured.”

Dr K Bhujang Shetty of Narayana Nethralaya said: "The incidence of eye injuries caused by firecrackers rises significantly on Diwali days because of so many new and unfamiliar firecrackers entering the market every year."

While males made up for 73 per cent of the patients, children under the age of 15 comprised 39 per cent of the total eye injury cases last year. However, the most sad part of all this was that nearly 40 per cent of the injured were bystanders.
