A strong aspirant of the party’s ticket, Kiran Kumar deserted the party when he could not avail the ticket and is contesting the by-polls as an independent. Replying to a query by Deccan Herald Tanveer Sait refused to elaborate on Kiran’s candidature saying ‘he had left the party much before the process to file nominations began and hence cannot be deemed as a rebel Congress candidate’.

Split numbers

Among the total 9,022 votes, Veerangere alone has about 3,000 voters with Nayakas being the dominant community followed by Veerashaivas having 700 to 750 votes and others.

Muslims are also dominant, having about 3,000 odd votes but spread in Mohammed Sait Block, Sattar Sait Block and Gandhinagar. Christians form the chunk in Lourd Nagar situated just behind Veerangere, near to the famous St Philomena’s Church.

The other community voters include vishwakarmas, pourakarmikas and also SC.
