Completing a century

Successful: Prachi Desai in Once Upon...After earning significant critical acclaim and commercial success, Balaji Motion Pictures’ worldwide blockbuster Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai, directed by Milan Luthria, is ready to complete its 100-day run at the box office.

Producer Ekta Kapoor remarked, “We are thankful for the support received from the audience and trade alike. The response to the film has been overwhelming and along with ‘Love Sex Aur Dhokha’ earlier this year, we have clearly shown our versatility and mettle as creative producers. I’m sure a sequel to Once Upon... isn’t far!”

Said Luthria, “Working on Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai has been a wonderful experience. It was a great collaboration of my creative experience, strong production and marketing expertise provided by Balaji Motion Pictures, which helped transform my vision into the magical story we saw on screen. I look forward to building upon this relationship through future projects with the company.”

Once Upon A Time in Mumbaai, which took the audience back to a retro era of gangsters and cabaret, hit the theatres on July 30, and emerged as one of the biggest box office and musical hits of 2010. The movie starred Ajay Devgan, Kangana Ranaut, Emraan Hashmi, Prachi Desai and Randeep Hooda, among others.

Age no bar

Actresses in their 30s are reinventing themselves and are no longer considered to be over the hill. In the youth-obsessed industry of Bollywood, where the popularity of an actress depends not just on talent but also on age and marital status, leading ladies in their 30s are now ensuring that the spotlight stays on them. 37-year-old Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has had quite a few releases this year.

Besides, there is a new realisation that those no longer in the limelight have, in fact, consciously opted to stay away. “For how long can one play only glamourous roles? I want to do roles with substance,” says  Preity Zinta.

Film-maker Madhur Bhandharkar, who has cast Tabu, Konkona Sen Sharma and Bipasha Basu in strong roles, says, “Leading lades, in their 30s, have nothing left to prove. They have their oeuvre to speak  for them. It is the younger actresses who have to face serious competition from them.”

When the heroine became a hero...

In most Hindi films, we have seen the hero lift the heroine in some scene or the other. But ever thought of a heroine carrying a hero on her back? It’s a bit difficult to imagine isn’t it? But Deepika Padukone has managed to do that! In other words, the actress has lifted Imran Khan in her forthcoming film, Break Ke Baad. Although it wasn’t easy, she managed it after some training and rehearsals. Turns out that the scene was easier said than done as Imran weighs 75 kgs as against Deepika’s negligible 55 kg weight.

“To ensure that she didn’t suffer from any back problems while performing the scene, she wore a thick, wide belt as a preventive measure,” says a source. It took two days to complete the shooting for this sequence, but apparently, the end result is brilliant.

‘Vivek is like a brother’

Mika Singh attended buddy Vivek Oberoi’s marriage on October 29 in Bangalore. The singer said, “Vivek is very special to me as my entry into Bollywood — Ae Ganpat — was picturised on him. Since Shootout At Lokhandwala, Vivek has been like a brother to me and there was no way I was going to miss his wedding ceremony. I knew there was a reception in Mumbai later but it’s the marriage ceremony that’s a big event and I wanted to attend his marriage. There weren’t many Bollywood people present apart from Apurva Lakhia and myself. I made sure to attend the pheras as that’s the most important part of any Indian wedding.”

He added, “The marriage was a very classy affair. The place was done up stylishly and there was an aura of good taste around. Unlike other weddings where people are rushing and pushing, this one was very peaceful. The ceremony was peaceful and full of joy. There were close friends and relatives of the beautiful bride Priyanka and my brother Vivek couldn’t have looked more handsome. Vivek’s family looked amazing and Suresh uncle spoke to me only in Punjabi. The food was lovely and the overall ambience completely knocked me out.”

He further said, “I must say that Vivek’s wedding is one of the best weddings I have ever attended. We spent time sitting together before the ceremony and Vivek seemed very happy and at peace. He told me he was glad to see me there and I told him I could not  have missed his marriage for anything else in the world. I could not attend the other functions but I made it a point to attend the pheras as that’s the most important part of any Indian wedding.”

Making their debut

Gautam Sharma and Shweta Verma, who make their debut in Picture Thoughts Production Bhindi Baazaar, seem to be sharing a bit more than screen space these days. Both actors have become very close friends and share a warm and healthy relationship off-screen as well.

Shweta says, “Being a newcomer, I was nervous during the initial days of shooting. However, Gautam along with the other stars of the film, made me feel comfortable and also helped me get my shots right.”

Bhindi Bazaar is a realistic account of politics involving pick-pockets in the infamous and densely populated area of Mumbai's bhindi bazaar. Directed by Ankush Bhatt, the movie stars Kay Kay Menon, Prashant Narayanan, Piyush Mishra, Pawan Malhotra, Shilpa Shukla and Deepti Naval.

Creating ‘dhoom’

Fantastic: RajnikantYashraj Films’ PR machinery seems to be to busy churning out one denial after another.

According to the Yashraj Films’ PR guys, “An article in a trade publication suggests that Rajnikant may be approached for a pivotal role in Dhoom 3. While Yash Raj Films has utmost respect for the actor, the truth is that no such plans have been made. The script is still under finalisation and all casting will be done post that. We do appreciate the interest that is buzzing around Dhoom 3. We, however, request you to await an impending announcement in January 2011 of our forthcoming releases, including that of Dhoom 3 and the much-awaited directorial venture of Yash Chopra.”
