Speaking at Safe-fleets, a joint road safety initiative by the Government of Karnataka and CII-Institute of Quality, he said there is a need for proper road planning along with awareness on road safety to decrease accidents. Rao said to ensure safety the road construction and planning department and transport department should work diligently, and both have performed poorly.
G R Shanmugappa, President, All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) said that more than 70 lakh trucks ply on the highways, and there are no basic facilities for the drivers on these roads.
“These drivers are subjected to stress and fatigue leading to more road accidents. Better road facilities can reduce deaths due to accidents,” he said.
Awareness crucial
He said awareness programme for truck drivers is crucial to implement traffic rules. “There is a dearth of driving schools in India which is why the drivers lack basic knowledge on road safety, he added.

Safe-fleets is a programme for the adoption of a voluntary standard for road safety in the commercial transportation.
Vehicle management, driver management, journey management, contractor management and road, transport health, safety and environment management system are identified as basic pillars of road safety.
