Speaking after inaugurating a four-day Krishi Mela at University Agricultural Sciences (UAS), GKVK campus in Bangalore, the Governor said conversion of fertile land would have an adverse impact on foodgrain production and security. Bhardwaj said the Government should strictly adhere to guidelines while acquiring farm land. He felt that farmers in the country too should raise to the standards of their western counterparts in progress and development.

The Government, he said, can play an active part in improving the standard of living of farmers by providing suitable support price and subsidies.

“It is unfortunate that today priority is not being accorded to farmers”, Bhardwaj said and called for greater efforts on the part of agricultural experts to eradicate poverty and in attaining self sufficiency in food supply.

Social Welfare Minister A Narayanaswamy urged the Centre to revive the river linking project to provide irrigation facilities to farmers in rain deficient areas. Innovations and technological advances made in laboratories should reach the farmers, he added.
