Credit cards transactions up 19 per cent in September

The number of credit cards in circulation, however, was down by nearly 14 per cent at 1.84 crore as on September 30, 2010, compared to 2.13 crore in the same period last fiscal.
During the April-September period, the total value of transactions carried out using credit cards increased by 18.89 per cent to Rs 34,872.58 crore from Rs 29,332.80 crore in the first six months of 2009-10.

Meanwhile, debit card transactions surged by 41.22 per cent to Rs 2,985.23 crore in September, 2010, from Rs 2,113.96 crore in the corresponding month last year.
There were 20.38 crore debit cards in use in the country as of September 30, 2010, up 28 per cent from 15.90 crore in the year-ago period.

In the April-September period, the total value of transactions carried out using debit cards jumped by 43.31 per cent to Rs 17,233.84 crore from Rs 12,025.88 crore in the first six months last fiscal.
