Punjab deputy CM resigns

A press communique of the Akali Dal, which Sukhbir heads, said he resigned on “technical grounds.”

Sukhbir Badal was sworn in as deputy chief minister on January 21 but could not get elected to the state assembly within six months as per the constitutional provisions. The six-month deadline for Sukhbir’s election to the assembly was to expire on July 21. Party sources said Sukhbir was likely to contest one of the three by-elections slated for August 3. The ruling Badal family was mulling over reviving the upper house and nominating Sukhbir as MLC but was shelved after protests by the opposition parties.
