<p>The cases of people abandoning new born babies, children turning orphans all of a sudden are on the rise in Hassan. <br /><br />Statistics point to a grave concern on the infants that are abandoned and the children growing in the orphanages with lack of parental care, love and facilities to educate themselves and stand up to the expectations of the society. <br /><br />Found in bins<br /><br />In past six months, four new born babies were found in bins belonging to city municipal council besides the cases of grown up children being abandoned by their parents in city. <br />The babies found in bins came as a shock for the people here, even as the growing number of children turning orphanages is also turning a headache for the administration. <br /><br />Orphanages<br /><br />A city based NGO Thavaru Trust (not operational from past few days due to various reasons) accepted about 69 children in the last two and half years. <br /><br />Two other private orphanages have also scores of children being looked after, other than children at the Balabhavan. The number of children becoming orphans in the State, is one among the highest in the district. <br /><br />However, there is little effort from the department of women and child welfare to find out the reason for the unacceptable trend, though it has several schemes for orphan children. <br /><br />Survey<br /><br />A survey attributes the development to the social and economic status of women labourers who work in the farms in the hilly regions. Adolescent and young girls become a victim of sexual exploitation, even as the gullible parents remain silent fearing the rich. <br />Girls deceived<br /><br />Whereas, the cases girls deceived by their boyfriends and HIV infected families leaving their babies outside the hospitals in fear of the society are also reported. <br /><br />There are also good number of girl babies and children that are abandoned in recent years, it adds. <br /><br />Surprisingly, cases have also been reported about children quitting the Government run Balbhavan. <br /><br />When the inmates go missing, the officials’ responsibility gets over after lodging a police complaint, and there are hardly any attempts made to trace the children. </p>
