How, Styris return as Kiwis name squad for ODI series

Last Updated 18 November 2010, 07:47 IST

The 29-year-old How was included in the squad considering his performance in the Champions League Twenty20 for the Central Districts and for New Zealand A on the tour of Zimbabwe last month.

Styris and Martin Guptill, who were left out of the ODI series against Bangladesh, have been included in the squad.

The first ODI is scheduled at Guwahati on November 28, followed by matches in Jaipur (December 1), Vadodara (December 4), Bangalore (December 7) and Chennai (December 10).

Selector Mark Greatbatch said the selection committee reposed faith on the squad which played in the disastrous Bangladesh tour.

"We have kept faith with the bulk of the squad who played in the disappointing tour of Bangladesh and who have performed well in the current Test series against India," he said.

"The squad sees the return of Jamie How who deserves his opportunity after impressing the selectors for some time. We feel One-day cricket is the format for him to return to international cricket.

"A couple of players, Martin Guptill and Gareth Hopkins, which were part of the New Zealand A team who recently toured Zimbabwe will stay on.  Martin has shown good form with the bat and Gareth will provide wicket keeping cover for Brendon McCullum," he added.

Greatbatch hoped the players who missed out would work harded and make a comeback into the team."Unfortunately this means BJ Watling misses out on selection and I'm sure he will look to score plenty of runs for the Northern Knights and press for selection in the future.

"We welcome back Scott Styris from injury while Hamish Bennett and Shanan Stewart were unavailable for selection due to injury.

"This 15-man squad is really looking forward to playing positive cricket in what promises to be an exciting one-day series," he said.

The Squad: Daniel Vettori (c), Grant Elliott , Martin Guptill, Gareth Hopkins, Jamie How, Brendon McCullum, Nathan McCullum, Andy McKay, Kyle Mills, Jesse Ryder, Tim Southee, Scott Styris, Ross Taylor, Daryl Tuffey, Kane Williamson.
