Rain fury: Hassan district pitches loss at ` 60 crore

Last Updated 19 November 2010, 18:09 IST

A decision in this regard was taken at a special meeting held in Hassan Zilla Panchayat on Thursday. As many as  six persons died, 4,839 livestock were killed, 600.52 kilometres of road got damaged, 312 tanks were affected in different ways, including breaching of bund, and 1201 houses collapsed.

This apart, heavy losses came in the form of crops on 9227 hectares of fields being destroyed owing to heavy down pour, according to official statistics across taluks of the district.

Cutting across political lines, all members of the ZP demanded the State and Union Government to release the compensation on priority basis to bail out the affected people.
Speaking on the occasion, MLA H D Revanna urged the Government for immediate release of
` 30 crore out of ` 60 crore total loss, to start the relief works.

He came down heavily on Panchayat Raj and Rural Development Minister Jagadish Shettar for curtailing the powers of ZP members in the Panchayat Raj system.

This government has not even given permission for ZP members to take up district-level relief works.

He condemned the State Government decision of inviting tender for Zilla Panchayat Works.
Revanna held that Jagadish Shettar was responsible for injustice to backward class people in the announcement of reservation in Zilla and Taluk Panchayat elections.

This minister has crippled the complete concept of decentralisation in a government set-up, he added.  MLA H S Prakash, Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Anjankumar, Vice President S Dyavegowda and others were present.

 Saree distribution, probe sought

Former minister H D Revanna also charged that Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa has committed financial irregularities in the purchase of sarees for distribution of Bhagyalakshmi beneficiaries.

“The CM was told that the sarees was purchased for ` 200 each, but the real cost of this saree is  ` 100 in the open market. Besides, no company existed in Gujarath, whose name the BJP Government quotes from where the sarees were purchased, to be distributed among mothers of Bhagyalakshmi beneficiaries”, he said.

He sought the State Government to order for probe in the purchase of 11 lakh sarees as a lot of financial irregularities had occurred.
