"The revenue department as a whole is facing a shortage of manpower of almost 50 per cent and this is hampering our work," Union revenue secretary Sunil Mitra said here today on the sidelines of ICC Exim Summit 2010.
The shortage was widespread across ranks. Without divulging the details, he said there were various reasons for the shortfall and the department was taking measures to address the situation.
Speaking on tax collections, he said in the first seven months the cumulative tax collection from direct and indirect tax was higher by close to 19 per cent over the previous year.
The combined target for tax collection this year is Rs 7.45 lakh crore.
