Pranab to break ice on 2G scam

The Congress core group, including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and party chief Sonia Gandhi, met here to devise the strategy after two weeks of stonewalling of Parliament by the Opposition over their demand for a Joint Parliamentary Committee probe into the scam. Mukherjee, who is also the Leader of the Lok Sabha, is expected to convey the Congress’ response to the Opposition.

Home Minister P Chidambaram, Defence Minister A K Antony and political secretary to the Congress chief, Ahmed Patel, also attended the meeting.

Mukherjee may meet Sonia early on Monday and apprise her about the responses from the Opposition, before Parliament resumes session after the weekend break. According to Congress sources, while the ruling party was averse to go in for a JPC probe, the finance minister would make it clear to the Opposition that the government alone was not responsible for running Parliament. He would convey an appeal from Singh to all political parties to allow the parliamentary proceedings to resume and that the government was ready for discussion on all issues, including the 2G scam, in Parliament.
