CJ calls for enhancing legal education in schools

Flagging off a mobile van for a legal literacy campaign at the  High Court premises on Sunday, he said with the setting up of Lok Adalats, people had an alternative mechanism to settle disputes instead of approaching the courts directly.

Justice Khehar said the slum dwellers in the City, due to their lack of legal knowledge, were not able to make optimal use of these services.

He said that legal awareness was improving in villages with the establishment of Lok Adalats.

There was also a need to incorporate modules on legal education in schools, to create  awareness among children about their rights, he said.

The Chief Justice also called for a  debate on handling public interest litigation by the courts.
The flagging off ceremony was followed by a conference of chairmen and member secretaries of district legal authorities and chairmen of taluk legal services committee.

The meet was inaugurated by Justice R V Raveendran and presided over by Justice Khehar, Justice Manjula Chellur, and Justice N K Patil.
