Last Updated 23 November 2010, 15:52 IST

"Recently I was invited for a conference on science in China. I was denied visa as I am over 80 years of age. There is a rule here that people above 80 should not be invited to speak on science...the organiser later withdrew the invitation," C R Rao told a group of MPs here.
The 87-year-old Padma Vibhushan awardee was delivering a talk on 'Progress in the lives of Indian masses since Independence' at the Parliament House library.

Rao ranks among the world leaders in statistical science over the last six decades and is considered an authority on theory and application of statistics.

During his lecture, Rao used a variety of data to show that 20 million children were not attending schools and perhaps could be working as child labourers."We are losing a lot of brain power due to this," he said adding that these children if given the opportunity can be future leaders and scientists
