Poverty drives family to death

Mother, three sons consume poison after incurring loss in business

This tragic episode unfurled in the afternoon. Thirty-five year-old Chand Bi consumed poison and gave poison-laced food to her three sons, eight-year-old Riyaz, Siraj (6 years) and Samir (3 years). Later, she pushed them all into a sump before jumping into it herself.

Police said, Chand Bi was a native of Bagalkot and was married to Hasan Saab, who is a truck driver. About 10 months ago, Hasan Saab had bought a truck and engaged it with a transport company. But his luck ran out and within a few months of acquiring the truck, his business was affected badly. Soon, he sunk into deep debt.

To clear his debt, he sold his truck at a throw-away price. But even that drastic move did not help him get rid of the money-lenders, who were constantly pressurising him to return the borrowed amount.

While Hasan Saab was struggling to clear the debts, the family was pushed to abject poverty and Chand Bi was finding difficult to meet the two ends.

Drastic step

Finally, on Friday she took the drastic step. She bought poison from a nearby shop, mixed it with the food and gave it to her children.

As news spread about the suicide pact spread in the area, the locals crowded Hasan Saab’s house. Inside, he and his mother were in deep shock, unable to come to terms with tragedy. It was the police who shifted the bodies to the Victoria Hospital for post-mortem.

Police awaited the arrival of Chand Bi’s parents, who had left their native Bagalkot for Bangalore on hearing about the deaths.
