Prannoy surprise for Gopal

Prannoy surprise for Gopal

Unseeded Sindhu clinches womens title in straight games

Fifth seed Prannoy had to dig deep to overpower his friend and practice partner at the Gopichand Academy in the summit clash that lasted 45 minutes.

To his credit, Prannoy played the crucial points well in the first game but he erred one too many times to hand the second game to his rival.

The match went neck-and-neck until 8-all in the decider before Prannoy scored three points on the trot to take a stranglehold. The 18-year-old celebrated victory when Gopal hit a backhand return into the net.

Earlier, Sindhu PV also scored a 21-14, 22-20 upset win over fourth seed Neha Pandit to clinch the women’s title.  The unseeded Sindhu easily took the first game with aggressive smashes and with a little bit of help from Neha, who was far below her best.

With Neha failing to find her rhythm, the first half of the second game too went along the same lines. But at 14-8, Neha came up with a drop shot and from then on, she slowly reduced the margin before levelling the scores at 16-all.

Neither player enjoyed more than a one-point margin after that and at 20-19, Neha saved a match point with a drop-cum-shot. But Neha failed to sustain the momentum as she drove a return into the net before Sindhu came up with a down-the line smash to bag the crown.
