A day before the State Assembly was convened on Tuesday, a large number of freshly elected MLAs decided to pay obeisance to the almighty.

At the forefront of the thanksgiving mission to God is Chief Minister Nitish Kumar who visited the famous Baikatpur temple near Fatuha and offered prayers to Lord Shiva after the NDA’s landslide victory in the recent polls.

Nitish’s visit was planned after he expressed his desire to thank God for such an unprecedented mandate in Bihar. Sources close to the chief minister, however, said Nitish performed the puja for peace and prosperity of the state.

Taking a leaf out of his book, his party (JD-U) MLAs too have been visiting various temples. Sasaram MLA Jawahar Prasad, who defeated Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar’s brother-in-law Raj Shekhar, has already visited Mahavir-sthan, and later Sankat Mochan temple in Varanasi.

An Independent MLA from Dehri, Jyoti Rashmi too has offered prayers at Mudeshwari Bhawani temple on Kaimur hills, and is planning to visit Vindhyachal and Kashi Viswanath temple in UP.

If MLAs are thanking God, can the newly-appointed ministers be far behind? Minister for Art, Culture and Youth Affairs Sukhda Pandey has finalised her programme for Vaishno Devi temple in Jammu once the oath-taking ceremony is over.

She had been to Kamakhya temple before filing her papers from Buxar but wants to thank God again for not only helping her win, but also for gracing her with a ministry. Those who failed to find a place in the ministry are also planning to appease God so that they could be accommodated in the seven vacant berths. One such hopeful Raj Kishore Keshri, the BJP MLA from Purnia, has visited Puran Devi temple but wants to go on a pilgrimage.

“Without God’s grace, this kind of victory was unimaginable,” he averred. Likewise, JD (U) MLA from Chenari, Shyam Bihari Ram has offered prayers at Hanuman Temple, while Devyanti Devi, the BJP MLA from Narpatganj, has paid obeisance to God at the ancient Maa Khagadeshwari Kali temple in Araria.
