'Youth can contain spread of HIV'

There are 7,901 HIV/Aids infected persons in DK since 2002

Speaking after inaugurating World Aids Day organised jointly by the District Health and Family Welfare department, District Aids Nodal Unit at School of Social Work Roshni Nilaya here on Wednesday, he said “people need not be scared of Aids as people are aware of Aids and its symptoms and ways to contain its spread.

The DHO said that there are 7,901 Aids/HIV infected persons in Dakshina Kannada from 2002 till date. Of which, 490 persons have died of Aids.

School of Social Work Roshni Nilaya Principal Dr Jacinta D’Souza said: “We should change our attitude towards Aids infected persons. Even counsellors should be trained to show more concern towards the infected persons. Aids infected children deserve special care and attention from the society.

The society should ensure them normal education and all other common rights to them to lead a normal life.  Awareness campaign and preventive measures should go hand in hand to eliminate Aids, she added.

She said that media can play a major role in preventing killer diseases like Aids by creating an awareness among commonman.

District Aids Nodal Officer Dr Kishor Kumar said Aids awareness programme will be organised in association with various youth organisations and Red Ribbon Club of 32 Colleges.

Aids awareness programmes will be held at Meridian College in Ullal on December 2, Nitte Usha Institute of Nursing Sciences at Deralakatte on December 3, Subramanya K S S College, Noolibalthila on December 4, SDM Law College on December 5, at NSS Camp of Sri Ramakrishna College, Bunts Hostel at Pilikula in Vamanjoor on December 6, St Aloysius College and SDM College of Busness Management on December 7.

Gynaecologist Dr Rathidevi donated a sum of Rs 10,000 towards Samvedana, an NGO working for the cause. An informative booklet entitled ‘Jeevana Jopana’ was also released  on the occasion.

World Health Organisation (WHO) is observing December 1 as World Aids Day as Aids was detected on December 1, 1988.

IMA

Indian Medical Association in Mangalore too organised World Aids Day in which resource person Dr Ramachandra Bhat spoke in detail about the disease and its impact while Dr Mukund stressed the need for awareness about the disease.

FMHMC

The NSS unit of Fr Muller Homoeopathic Medical College observed Aids Day at Vishwamangala PU College in Konaje on Wednesday. Awareness programme will be held at St Sebastian PU College, Permannur on Thursday at 11 am.  About 3000 students of two different PU Colleges will witness various programmes related to HIV infection/ AIDS thorough skits, question and answer session and audiovisual display, states a release.
