The petitioner, 'Beyond Carlton Towers', prayed for making inspections mandatory either annually or biannually to test the efficacy of fire safety equipments installed at high rise buildings.
Those violating the laws should be punished and a law enacted for compulsory inspection of such buildings. Nine people died and about 60 injured in the fire that broke out in the seven-storeyed Carlton commercial towers on February 23.
A report from the Fire Force Department indicated that the fire safety gadgets installed in that building had failed to work during the tragedy and even staircases remained blocked.
