Meghana sets new mark

Karnataka’s Megh­ana Shetty set a meet record of 14.18s on her way to winning the Youth girls’ 100M hurdles on the second day of the National Inter-Zone Junior athletics Championships on Sunday.

Puneet Chauhan of Haryana and Ankita Sunil Gosavi of Maharashtra set national records in the boys’ under-14 600M and girls’ under-16 100M hurdles.

Ankita clocked 14.45 secs to win the girls’ event as she eclipsed Meghana’s mark of 14.57 set two years back.

Another Maharashtra girl Shriya Vilas Kolge (15.29) and Karnataka’s Simona Mascarenhas (15.42) took the silver and bronze medals respectively.

In the boys’ under-14 600M, Puneet shattered the national record with a time of 1:24.54s. Three other athletes who finished behind him also bettered the previous national record of 1:26.60 which was in the name of Manipur’s S Ibungo Singh since 1994.

The day also saw seven new meet marks being set. Local favourite Aneesh Abhay Joshi set a meet mark of 14.19 secs while taking the top honours in junior men’s 110M hurdles.

Aneesh, however, failed in his bid to improve the national record of 13.92s which stands in the name of J Surendhar of Tamil Nadu.
