Addressing a press meet here on Saturday, CMC president P Dayanand and vice-president M Bhaktavatsalam alleged that the BGML has reneged on its promise to pay Rs one crore to provide basic amenities at mines colonies. The condition in these colonies has gone from bad to worse. People who struggle for even a square meals a day are compelled to purchase water also. The BGML has not acted according to the agreement with the government entered in the year 2001 when the mine was closed.

Tax not paid

The company has not paid property tax for the past three years. While the Urban Development Department has directed not to take up development projects at areas which do not yield any revenue, the CMC, on humanitarian grounds has launched projects worth Rs 30 cr in the mines area, they said.

It was decided to sink a borewell in the Kennedy’s area on Saturday. However, the BGML security staff heckled the labourers and entrusted the borewell lorry to the police custody. “We had to get released the vehicle. The borewell sunk later yielded 4 inch water and can meet the water requirement of the entire area,” Bhaktavatsalam, who is also a former MLA said.

Turning their ire against the BGML in-charge Managing Director Sampath Kumar, they said he had been holding for the position for a long time materials worth crores of rupees have disappeared during his tenure. However, they did not substantiate their charge with any evidence. They said the City Municipality would write to the state government against his alleged irregularities and non-cooperation.

Councillors G Kumar, Samraj and others were present.
