157 couples tie nuptial knot in Dharmasthala

A total of 157 couples tied the nuptial knot at 6.40 pm at Sri Kshethra Dharmasthala on Wednesday. In fact, it was a feast for the eyes to witness 157 couples taking part in the 38th annual mass marriage ceremony irrespective of caste or creed.

All the buildings in Dharmasthala were decked up for the mass marriage. The couples entered Amrithavarshini auditorium in a procession. Later, the rituals were held as per the respective traditions amidst chanting of manthras. The couples later took a vow that they would lead a happy married life.

Dharmadhikari D Veerendra Heggde and Hemavathi Heggade gave away the sari, blouse, shawl and dhothi to the couples.

Expenditure

A total of Rs 7,000 was spent on each couple. It included Rs 4,450 for mangalasuthra, Rs 450 each for saree/blouse and shawl/dhothi/shirt, Rs 300 for religious rituals, Rs 1,050 for meals (for 20 persons) and Rs 300 other expenses.

The married couples included 40 from Dakshina Kannada, 25 from Udupi, 84 from Chikmagalur, Hassan, Bangalore and other districts, 7 from Kerala, and one from Tamil Nadu. This also included 12 inter caste couples.
