The work of clearing the area outside the shops that had been illegally occupied was carried on by the Department under heavy police security.

Initial protests

Shop-owners had initially opposed the work of widening the stretch between the Civil Court and the National College in Bagepalli.

The work on Monday started by bringing down shops by the Bharati Convent Road, which is one of the important roads in town.

Extended boundaries

“Most shop-owners in the town have extended their awnings till the roads. The demolition work is being undertaken using just four cutting machines although large earth movers are required for this,” complained some of the residents of the town.

The PWD Assistant Executive Engineer Malleshappa, staff members Narayana Reddy and Chandrashekhar Naidu, Town Municipal Council chief officer Sudhakar, Bescom Assistant Junior Engineer Vivek, Circle Inspector Sidderamegowda, Sub-inspector J Ananda Kumar were present during the work.
