Last Updated 07 December 2010, 13:04 IST

Pravin Devi was elected as a member of the BDC of Gursan block here by an open panchayat at Tuksan village, so that the post could help her to get free treatment to the HIV infection, which she contracted six months ago during blood transfusion at a nursing home in Aligarh, gram pradhan Mukesh Kumar said.

"We decided to ensure her election so that the fight her family was waging alone could get some strength and we also got the support of other villages", Kumar said, adding that Uttar Prasdeh Power Minister Ramvir Upadhaya has assured her of getting treatment at Lucknow's Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences.

Pravin, wife of a local farmer Umesh Chandra, got HIV infection during advanced stages of her pregnancy. A mother of a four-month-old daughter got hope to a proper treatment after her election.

A three member medical team has been constituted to look into the matter, Additional Director of Health S K Lohita said.
