In fact, Mangalore City Corporation Commissioner had urged the businessmen to renew their trade licenses for the year 2010-11 in March. The traders were asked to renew the licenses by submitting an application. The MCC had even warned of stringent action against those who failed to possess trade lincenses.

Deputy Commissioner Subodh Yadav in a recent meeting has made it clear that nobody will be allowed to carry out business activities in Mangalore City Corporation limits without possessing the trade license. In relation to nursing homes and medical units, proper ‘no objection certificates’ (NOC) have to be obtained from the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) for awarding the licences. With several ‘unauthorised’ business establishments running in the Mangalore City Corporation jurisdiction, the Commissioner has decided to conduct a survey on trade licenses.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, MCC Commissioner Dr Vijayaprakash said that several business establishments in City either do not have trade licenses or it has been expired. As a result, the MCC has been incurring a loss in its revenue. The demand for revenue from trade license in Rs one crore in MCC. It can be doubled if all the business establishments possess trade license and renew it periodically.” He said “about 25 to 30 SHGs will be involved in the process. The SHG members have already given orientation on the modules of the proposed plan. Format of the questionnaire has also been prepared to conduct the survey. In fact, MCC had made use of the service of the SHGs in getting underground drainage connection to the houses by pursuading the residents of Pachanady in MCC limits. The MCC has achieved success in it as several houses had come forward for connection of underground drainage.”

“The SHG members will be paid for the survey being carried out by them. Prior to the survey, an awareness will be created among the traders, so that they will voluntarily come forward to get the license. The SHG members will be given an Identity Card, so that people will not have any reason to complain. The ID cards are also getting ready. If we marginally increase the revenue of the MCC through the exercise, then it will be a positive sign for the MCC,” the Commissioner added.
