PIL on cow slaughter ban bill, Governor's recall dismissed

Last Updated 08 December 2010, 12:26 IST

A Division bench, comprising Chief Justice J S Khehar and Justice A S Bopanna, dismissed the PIL observing that it could not issue such a direction, as the Governor held a constitutional post and also that the "petition was politically motivated".

Earlier, the petitioner Advocate H R Vishwanath submitted that if cow slaughter was allowed, it would adversely impact fragmented land holders who depend on cattle especially cows for their livelihood.

Referring to the statements made by Governor that he had received a series of complaints from minorities against the bill while none from the majority community had complained, the petitioner stated "this leads to communal disharmony".

The petitioner also charged the Governor with "acting as on opposition party leader which did not befit his post", and also of trying to "topple the Yeddyurappa-led BJP government in collusion with the union government".
