Delivering the convocation address at the 10th convocation ceremony of Manipal University here at KMC Greens on Wednesday, she said universities have the responsibility to nurture the future citizens of the country. “Our education system should look at the holistic development of the youths,” she said.

Emphasizing on the three aspects which are important for the overall development of the youth, the President said education is about knowledge, knowledge without values is incomplete and the third aspect which is important is to build a spirit of working together constructively. Universities have an environment conducive for the healthy growth of the students, so that their talents can blossom and they become positive individuals, she said.

Stressing the importance of values without which knowledge is incomplete, she urged that the education system should strengthen adherence to secularism, inclusiveness and pluralism which are the great values enshrined in our Constitution. Education should impart values to the youth that makes them sensitive to fellow human beings and the environs around them. It is also important to build a spirit of working together constructively. It is a value system that can prepare the younger generation to become responsible citizens who contribute to the welfare of the society and to the advancement of the human race.

Concepts of peace, harmony and tolerance must be learned here, she said and called upon the students to have the aim to become intellectually competent and technically skilled with questioning mind.

Education should broaden the outlook of the youth moving away from the narrow approach to life, she added.

Technology carries itself the immense power to bring about revolutionary changes. The future belongs to science and those who make friends with science, she opined.
Governor H R Bhardwaj and Higher Education Minister Dr V S Acharya among others were present.
