Women may rule Dakshina Kannada ZP in next term

18 out of 35 seats reserved for women

Speaking to presspersons here on Friday, he said the reservations are as follows — SC (3, of which 2 women), ST (2 of which one woman), Backward Community A category (10, of which 5 women), Backward community B category (2 of which one woman), General (18, of which 9 women).

Mangalore Taluk Panchayat has 37 seats. Of which, 19 are reserved for women. Bantwal Taluk Panchayat has 33 seats and 18 are reserved for women. In Belthangady, 13 seats are reserved for women.

There are 24 seats. In Puttur, 13 seats out of 22 are reserved for women.
In Sullia, of 13 seats 8 are reserved for women.

Nominations

The DC said that filing of nominations for the Zilla Panchayat and Taluk Panchayat will start from December 13. The last date for filing nomination is December 20. The nominations will be scrutinised on December 21. The last date for the withdrawal of nomination is December 23. Election will be held on December 31 and the repolling if necessary will be held on January 3. The counting will be held on January 4.

Women voters

The district has 9,34,143 voters. Of which, 4,65,138 are men and 4,69,005 are women. There are 1,027 polling booths. Of which, 232 are sensitive and 174 are hyper sensitive. For the first time, Electronic Voting Machines will be used in the Zilla Panchayat and Taluk Panchayat elections. “As separate EVMs needs to be used, we have already received EVMs from New Delhi and Bhuvaneshwar,” he said.

Election officers

He said five officials have been appointed as the Election Officers and 9 Assistant Polling Officers for Zilla Panchayat. About 6,779 polling officers, presiding officers and Group D staff will be deployed for the smooth conduct of the election. State Election Commission has deployed K T Kaveriappa and Iqbal Hussain as the Election Observors to the district.
Stating that candidates contesting for Zilla Panchayat elections should not exceed their expenditure beyond Rs one lakh, the Deputy Commissioner said that the expenditure of Taluk Panchayat candidates must be limited to Rs 50,000. An Account Officer has been appointed to keep a watch on the expenditure of the candidates.

Counting

The mustering, de-mustering and counting centres are St Rosario Composite PU College, Mangalore; Infant Jesus English Medium School, Modankaup; SDM College, Ujire; St Philomena College, Puttur and NMC College, Sullia.

In 2005 Zilla Panchayat and Taluk Panchayat elections, about 117 candidates who contested have been disqualified from contesting for the next six years owing to the failure to furnish the expenditure details.

They include 19 in Zilla Panchayat, 33 in Mangalore TP, 36 in Bantwal TP, 2 in Belthangady, 10 in Puttur TP and 17 in Sullia TP.

Karavali utsav inauguration postponed

The inauguration of the Karavali utsav will be held on January 7 instead of December 22 in the wake of model code of conduct in force in the district. However, the exhibitions will commence from December 22 at the Exhibition grounds of Karavali Utsav.

Dec 31 to be dry day

This Year Mangaloreans may not be able to enjoy the new year party on the eve of New Year with dry days in force for the Zilla Panchayat and Taluk Panchayat elections in the district.
