Elephants destroy sugarcane plantation

Elephants entered the sugarcane plantation belonging to Swamy alias Manohar Naidu at midnight on Thursday and destroyed sugarcane crops. A resident, who saw the elephants on Friday morning informed the Forest Department officials. People started thronging the place when the news spread across the town.

A team led by Deputy Conservator of Forest Venkatesh, Zonal Forest Conservators Jayakumar and Baskar visited the spot immediately. Meanwhile, MLA C T Ravi held a discussion with the officials about the issue.

Forest Department officials and the police took all precautions as the plantation which was destroyed by the elephants is very close to Chikmagalur town. If the rogue elephants enter the town, then the situation may turn more disastrous and the officials will find it difficult to tame it. The officials decided to chase away the elephants to Bhadra reserve forest by bursting crackers and opening fire in the air.

Forest officials started bursting crackers and opening fire in the air at around 6 pm and later elephants moved towards the forest.
