JD(S) plea to Guv on polls

Last Updated 13 December 2010, 17:38 IST

Speaking to reporters after submitting the petition to Governor H R Bhardwaj, JD(S) Spokesperson Y S V Datta said his party had requested the SEC to direct all deputy commissioners and SPs to take steps to not allow “Hindu Samajotsav” celebrations across the state when the election code of conduct was in force.

However, the SEC did not take note of the JD(S)’ memorandum seeking its intervention to stop the religious conventions, Datta charged. The Samajotsav celebrations had the potential to spark communal violence in sensitive districts, he said and added that the tension that gripped Kundapura on Sunday during such a rally was a pointer to its apprehensions. “It is the intention of the ruling BJP to create tense atmosphere and to take undue political advantage of such situations,” he alleged.
