Tumkur district level committee chose Bhaktarahalli for the award after touring all the gram panchayats in the district and inspecting schools, anganwadi centres and monitoring cleanliness.

Mismanagement

Drainages choking with weeds, stagnant water, pond that was once a main source of water to the village, which has now been reduced into a dumpyard, greets visitors to the village.

Bhaktarahalli having won the  Nairmalya Award is qualified to participate in the Zonal level. The first prize money for the winning village is Rs five lakh.

Lost opportunity

At a time when there are so many programmes to improve the condition of villages in the State, Bhaktarahalli remains a sad reminder of a lost opportunity.

Villagers, officials concerned and people’s representatives instead of laying stress on winning the award should work towards total cleanliness in the village, urged the residents of Bhaktarahalli.
